St Leonard’s Mission church is the daughter church of the
Parish Church.
The Mission Rooms were built in 1895 under the instructions of Canon
Littleton, Vicar of Chesterfield. At that time Spital comprised
only Valley Road, Hartington Road, Alexandra Road, Stanley St and
part of Spital Lane. As the area developed, and the population grew,
the Mission rooms were hired by the Education Committee as an Infants
school, but pressure on space continued, and in 1909 the building
was extended, and the church dedicated to St Leonard on 18 November.

Further improvements followed, with a pipe organ installed in 1924 and electric
light and central heating in 1926. The Infants' school departed
for new premises in 1933.
A statue of St Leonard was placed in the church and dedicated in
1958, and Stations of the Cross installed in 1959. |

A War Memorial was erected outside church in 1919
in honour of Spital men killed in the first World War, and a memorial
board added in 1948 to commemorate those who lost their lives in
the second World war.
Today the church has one service each week, sung Eucharist at
9.30am on Sunday.
